What's the Difference?
By default, all new Fortinet hardware comes with some basic level of support and coverage. This is usually about a year of hardware warrant (RMA only), and about 3 months of firmware updates and basic support (business hours only). The exact coverage may vary based on the product, but it will usually be similar to this level. To take advantage of this initial warranty and support, you should register your product in FortiCloud Asset Management. There, you can provide your serial number or "FortiCloud Key" to associate the device with your account and fast-track support requests.
For extended coverage and advanced cloud management features, you'll need to purchase a FortiCare support license. When purchasing your FortiCare license, you'll have various options regarding length of coverage and support level (e.g. Premium vs . Elite). Once you've purchased your license, you can register it in the exact same manner as above in FortiCloud Asset Management.
While it's not a necessity to purchase a FortiCare license for your hardware, it is highly recommended and a no-brainer for production equipment. This ensures you'll always have access to the latest firmware and security patches, as well as enhanced support if something were to ever go wrong with your device or its associated cloud services.
