Intro
A side-by-side configuration error when installing Citrix Workspace can be caused by a handful of things. While the error message itself is pretty ambiguous and doesn't give much to work off of, what's important to remember is that it boils down to this: the configuration for the application is incorrect and caused it to fail to start. You'll most likely see this error if you're attempting to re-install Citrix Workspace on an endpoint that previously had it.
Receiving this error doesn't usually imply that your Citrix Workspace configuration settings or install parameters are incorrect (see our article on Error Code 40017), but rather that the application's configuration at the internal Windows level has gone awry.
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.(14001)
Steps to Resolution
Here's our recommended steps to take to resolve this issue. Note that some of these may steps involve removing system files and you should only attempt them if you're confident in what you're doing, as system instability or data loss could arise. These steps also assume you only have Citrix Workspace installed on the endpoint. If you have any other Citrix software installed, you should NOT proceed. Read our disclaimer at the bottom of the page before continuing.
1. Make sure all versions of Citrix Workspace are completely uninstalled
2. Reboot the device
3. Ensure all Windows updates are installed
4. Re-install Citrix Workspace and attempt to start it. If you're still experiencing the issue, repeat steps 1 & 2 and continue reading
5. Navigate to the "AppData" folder. You can quickly jump here by opening File Explorer and typing %appdata% in the navigation bar
6. Remove the following folders:
%appdata%/Roaming/Citrix
%appdata%/Roaming/ICAClient
%appdata%/Local/Citrix
7. You may also wish to delete any remaining Citrix program files, though uninstalling and rebooting is usually sufficient enough to clear these:
C:/Program Files(x86)/Citrix
8. Reboot the device again and re-install Citrix
Conclusion
At this point, you should hopefully be able to start Citrix Workspace successfully. Like we mentioned before, this error message tends to result from re-installing Citrix Workspace on a device and the leftover app data cache files cause some internal confusion for Windows. By clearing these out, installing all updates, and restarting the device, you'll have the best chances for success.
